Abstract

Nurses are becoming of aware of the seriousness of violence in our society. Victims of violence are beginning to speak up more about their experiences and legal penelties have become more sever in response to changing social consciousness. The family is expected to be a haven safe from violence, but nurses working in the community are be-coming increasingly awre that of the woman and children they meet are suffering abuse within their families. Family violence costs the human health and integrity of both the victims and the abusers : the victims, in turn, may learn to use abuse against others. Nursing needs knowledge about the family abuse in our society.
This study set out to understantd the subjective experience of women being battered by their husbunds with the hope that under-standing their experiences may help nurses to work woth them toward their goals far a different quality of life. The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical stucture of the lived experience of battered wives. The research question was "what is the experience of being a battered wife?".
The theory quding this study was Parse¢¥s Human Becoming theory of nursing and the mothodology was Parse¢¥s Research Methodology.
The data were gathered from May, 1990 to May, 1991 in one?three interview each with nine women who had experienced more than three episodes of violence in their marriage and were analyses according to Parse¢¥s Re-search Mothodoloty
? The structure of the lived experience which emerged was :
(1) The lived experience of being a battered wife in one of expanding her world view as she reveals and conceals her present situation and creating possibilities in life, seeking freedom within her valus system while living a life of moving between spearating and connecting.
(2) The lived experience of being a battered wife is one of expanding her world view as she reveals and-conceals her present situation.
? The strutural integration is illustrated in the foil owing.
1. Expressing verbally her past, present and future is interpreted as languaging
2. Concealing a part of herself in relationship with others is interpreted as revealing ?concealing.
3. Living a life keep moving between separating and connecting is interpreted as connecting?separating.
4. Voluntarily fighting back to improve the situation is interpreted as powering.
5. Affirming her own value and acting according to it is interpreted as valuing.
6. Developing self esteem and discovering meaning in life through a religious faith is interpreted as valiing
? The conceptual integration which emerged was :
The lived experience of being a battered wife is transforming through the revealing ?concealing of languaging toward powering through the valuing of connecting ? reparating.
Implications for theory development, research and practice were discussed including effective of Paese¢¥ Practice Methodology in clinical practice. Further research using Parse¢¥ Human Beooming Nursing theory and Re-search methodology in the study of other experiences of family violence was recommanded.
